1930

Alma Holland Beers, the first female botanist at UNC, works with Dr. Coker, and begins teaching undergraduate and graduate students until 1940 that includes her favorite course, “Structure, Growth and Classification of Ferns.” She teaches William J. Koch, who becomes a distinguished faculty member in the Botany Department. Beers deposited over 700 botanical specimens in the UNC Herbarium. Beers designed the china used by the Carolina Inn for many years. (A sample of the china is displayed in an Herbarium showcase).
